5Outstanding Espresso / Great Size & Design
By Michael Miller
After weeks of research we ended up selecting the Jura-Capresso ENA 4.I was a bit skeptical that this small little super automatic could really replace our larger manual and brew quality espresso. I went to a local retailer and was fortunate enough to be able to use a demo unit. I was amazed by how simple and intuitive the ENA 4 is to use; while at the same time provides a level of flexibility and control well beyond my expectations. The Jura-Capresso site has some great video demos as well as other info that is worth checking out.[...]If you're looking for a super automatic, I highly recommend you take a look at the ENA. Our unit has exceeded our expectations. Great espresso and lattes!

5Great Superautomatic At A Terrific Price Point
By Boulder Larry
We are loving the convenience and speed of fresh-ground espresso and coffee from the Jura over the drip, Chemex, and stovetop espresso methods we previously used.I picked this brand/model over others for several reasons:1) We like strong coffee and the ability to use up to 16 grams of coffee for a single shot is great.2) The bypass doser capability lets me keep the machine stocked with regular beans but use decaf ground coffee for evening treats.3) At 1450 watts, the machine seems like it would heat and steam better than those with less powerful heating elements. Indeed, I've yet to see the machine take more than 60 seconds to warm up (even on cold mornings with the heat in the house turned down to 60 degrees). Note that to prevent overloading of circuits and blowing a house fuse or tripping a circuit breaker, you shouldn't run any other heating or high current draw appliances (such as a toaster or microwave) on the same electrical circuit at the same time.4) The clear display messages (for making selections, filling, emptying, and service) are way easier to understand than the individual LEDs with tiny adjacent symbols on some other machines.5) The back of the machine is just as pretty as the front, so it fits great on an island or peninsula in the kitchen where all sides are visible.6) Although there was some complaints, there seemed to be a fairly good consensus about its reliability, and its 2 year / 6000 cup warranty (where Jura pays the shipping both ways) gives me peace of mind. The panarello wand seems to work fine but it's somewhat labor intensive. Since I wanted to automate that process too, I got a Capresso frothPRO. I've written a separate review on that. However, I often take advantage of the ENA's ability to dispense instant hot water from the wand to warm up cups prior to brewing. My most frequent drinks are 4, 6 or 8 ounce brewed coffees, as well as espresso shots for lattes, cappuccinos and mochas. The quality of the coffee seems very good but I'm not a true espresso or coffee connoisseur.I'm still trying to find the perfect beans for this machine. We have been using Starbucks dark roast beans for years with other brewing methods but they are really oily and I am afraid of gumming up my machine. I found out from a very helpful barista in my local Starbucks store that the Starbucks decaf beans (even the dark roasted ones) aren't oily, so we've been using those pretty regularly with great success. I've also tried several types of Lavazza beans and have been pleased with them. Unfortunately my partner and I don't agree on the brand we prefer, so we have been alternating beans month-to-month!There are several drawbacks of this Jura but they are minor for me:1) Water reservoir--size. At 37 ounces, the reservoir is small to begin with and the water filter (if used) reduces that capacity by about 5 ounces. In addition, the machine asks to be refilled when there's still a few ounces left--you can't usually run it until it's completely empty. I personally don't mind filling it with fresh water daily and the two inches of width this smaller machine saves on my counter over larger Jura models is actually worth it to me. So while this size is totally fine for the two of us, I probably wouldn't recommend this model for heavy brewed coffee drinkers or more than two regular users unless you don't mind filling it up frequently.2) Water reservoir--location. The machine is 14 inches high at its peak and the water reservoir is located in the back. The reservoir needs to be lifted at least an additional 2.5 inches to gain enough clearance to be removed. Also, since the bypass doser is also located near the back of the machine, it's awkward to fill that if the machine is under a cabinet.Although I had the required 16.5 inches clearance under my kitchen cabinets, I decided to put mine on a peninsula for easy access.3) The single rotary dial / pushbutton is only really pre-customizable for a single drink (strength, amount of water, and temperature). However, it's easy enough to override the strength or size and brew a different drink as a one-off (particularly since the Jura machines with multiple buttons for one-touch drinks were literally twice the price).4) There's no auto-on at a specified time. Not a big deal for me, especially since the machine is so quick to warm up.5) It doesn't show stats on how many coffees we have brewed. That's kind of a geeky feature but would make it easy to figure out if I'm getting my money's worth for this expensive purchase. However, the machine keeps some track of this internally since it asks to be cleaned approximately every 180 coffees. I can estimate my cup count by keeping track of the cleaning frequency. If you're looking to purchase an ENA, please note that the ENA 3, 4 and 5 are all pretty much the same machine. The ENA 3 comes in all-black or all-white while the ENA 4 has a silver front. The ENA 5 looks like the ENA 4 color-wise but adds a switchable single/dual spout (no biggie as far as I can tell) and a FrothXpress accessory. (The FrothXpress can be purchased separately for the ENA 3 or 4 for around sixty bucks.)While this is the most expensive small appliance I have ever bought, after a year of living with it, I remain thrilled with this purchase!

By Richard Evans
I purchased the ENA4 2 years ago, actually I purchased the ENA3 which is black, but I was given the ENA4. The only difference is the color. It has never failed to produce an excellent shots of espresso. Generally, I make lattes or cappuccino.Performing the routine maintenance, when indicated, produces the best results. This is a home unit, not designed for power users. Wouldn't recommend it for an office or high volume household.
